What does It mean to Take the Lords Name In Vain.

Postby Remnant » 17 Oct 2009, 20:34

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain (Ex. 20:7)

Is this scripture talking about swearing and using the Lords name, such as J.C. Or G. D. Or O.M.G. etc. ? Or does it mean more then that?

I feel that this commandment was given to show respect and reverence for the sanctity of God's Name. When we use His name in such trivial and, actually, blasphamous ways, we show a great disrespect for who He is and for His name. Swearing is probably the most common trivial misuse of His Name.

Taking the Lord's name in vain doesn't just refer to a certain tone of voice or a certain use of the word. It's dealing with God and speaking of God in a way that empties or denies Him of His significance.

This could include G.D. Or J.C. as well as speaking about him in trifling and flippant manner. Not just swearing ways but cheap ways, low and insignificant ways that just treat Him like a commodity. Lacking in fear of the Lord and Mocking Him is a sure sign of taking the Lord's Name in vain. Denying God, Christ, the cross, the things He is and the things He did are taking the Lord's name in vain. Improper worship and Idolotry is taking the Lord's name in vain.

I think taking the Lord's name in vain is more than Swearing His name or misuse of His name. It is that plus much more.

The best way I know to look at it is to have reverence of the Lord God, love God, delight in God, know God, glorifying God for all that He is. And then out of the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak praises of Him.

So to me, to take the Lord's name in vain would mean He is empty to you. Your mind doesn't feel the weight and fullness of His glory.

Personally I believe it's total 'disrespect' for God...

Never did this before I was saved...

That's very good.
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,… (Ephesians 3:20)
