What are spiritual gifts?

Postby JWayne » 13 Aug 2009, 16:10

Discovering spiritual gifts is not a hunt for lost treasure. 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12:3-8 make it clear that every believer is given spiritual gifts according to the Holy Spirit's choice or direction-for the purpose of edifying other believers (1 Corinthians 12:7; 14:12). The exact timing of when these gifts are given is not specifically mentioned. I had always assumed that they were like "spiritual genetics," meaning you received your spiritual gifts at the moment of salvation and then had to develop them. However, there are some Scriptures that seem to indicate that God may bless us with spiritual gifts later in our Christian life as well. Both 1 Timothy 4:14 and 2 Timothy 1:6 refer to a "gift" that Timothy had received at the time of his ordination. Most Bible teachers interpret this to mean that one of the elders at Timothy's ordination proclaimed-under God's influence-of a spiritual gift that Timothy would have as an enablement for his future ministry. These two verses indicate that Timothy had a responsibility to stir up, develop, and use this gift.

I've known people who manifested a gift,
but were so humble they didn't even realize they had it. :ags

Jeani, Thanks for bringing this up! What I would like to do is change this to What are your spiritual Gifts. Here are some good sites to go to and some test that might help one determine that, if they do not know already!

Here is one that is very thorough:

Interesting links, Frank. I've never taken a spiritual gifts test before.

I didn't even know some of those things were gifts.
Discernment and poverty were my top two.
Poverty....chuckle...no wonder I never have any money. :lamo

My are: according to the test

100% Teacher Hebrews 5:12-14
100% Servant/Helps Acts 6:2-4
100% Intercession 1 Timothy 2:1-2

I have a good Christian friend that saw my spiritual gifts in me before I realize them myself. She told me she could see the 'love of prophecy'/faith in me~ Yes, I don't believe there are any prophets today, and all prophecy has been written within the Bible.

That's been a long time ago~

Three Basic Facts About Spiritual Gifts
1. Spiritual gifts are freely and graciously given. Gifts of grace cannot be earned, for you cannot do anything to get them in your own power. "And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly" (Rom. 12:6; emphasis mine).

A gift is not earned or merited so a believer should not feel personal pride or self satisfaction due to his gift. "But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift" (Ephesians 4:7; emphasis mine).

2. Spiritual gifts are a means of serving in the Body of Christ. Gifts are not to exalt the person who has the gift; they are to enable that person to serve other believers. "As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Pet. 4:10).

3. Spiritual gifts necessitate the activity of the possessor. You will discover your gift as you function. Many do not recognize their gift because they are inactive. Just as a baby is born with all the necessary parts, he must learn to use those parts through activity. Many Christians are sitting around waiting to be discovered. In their waiting they become frustrated because they are not functioning as God intends.

The Permanent Spiritual Gifts
1. Teaching
2. Helps (Ministering)
3. Administration
4. Evangelism
5. Pastor-Teacher
6. Exhortation
7. Giving
8. Mercy
9. Faith
10. Celibacy

Now let's post what gifts we see in each other~

Hi Jeani! Actually the first Spiritual gift that was recognized in me was the gift of discernment and then evangelism. I believe the two go hand and hand. Then Preaching, Teaching Prophecy and Shepherding.
I personally believe that God can manifest any gift that He sees fit to use for his glory and the edification of the church at any given moment. Some stay with us and some are just for the time that they are necessary.

As far as what gifts I see in others on this board. I can only make a judgment on the regulars that come on here daily.

Jeani, I see the gift of Prophecy, Teaching and Service.

Carmela, I see the gift of Compassion or Mercy, Encouragement, Discernment, Giving!

Wayne, I see the gift of Encouragement, Service, Giving!

Lynda, (Januarie) I see the gift of Discernment, Prophecy, Evangelism and Encouragement.

It didn't take that long for me, and it was fun, too.
