A retired Army chaplain is concerned about the ramifications of homosexuals serving openly in the military, and he reports that a number of mainline denominations are ready to endorse open homosexuals as military chaplains.
Col. Ron Crews (USA-Ret.) served as a chaplain for 28 years, including stints with the storied 82nd and 101st Divisions. He now serves as a chaplain endorser for Grace Churches International and is a spokesman for the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, a group that wants to protect evangelical chaplains from the dangers created by the government's decision to force open homosexual behavior on the armed forces.
For one thing, Crews says they believe that within months of the implementation of the new policy, homosexuality will be foisted on the chaplain corps of the various services.
Chaplain Ron Crews (USA-Ret.)"At an endorsers' meeting last January, some of the endorsers from some of the more liberal faith groups indicated that they had chaplains already in place who were homosexual and would be announcing when that time came," the retired chaplain reports. "So we believe that there will be an environment where there will be homosexual chaplains."
And despite this new environment, he is encouraging chaplains of conscience to stay the course, even if they fear they may be marginalized.
"I remind our chaplains that -- number one -- promotions come from God; and secondly, that G-O-D is bigger than D-O-D and that God can do what he wants with a chaplain who is fully committed and dedicated to him," Crews shares. "And ... we're not there for the promotions; we're there to serve."
Still, in the wake of the new policy, he hopes Congress will hold hearings and take steps to protect religious liberty.
