Religion vs. Christianity: What’s the difference?

Written by: Ron Carlson www.awakengeneration.com

“Why are you Christians always sending missionaries overseas? People have their own culture, their own religion, why don’t you just leave them alone?!” This is one of the most common statements we hear as we lecture on college and university campuses throughout the United States and around the world. Students and faculty often jeeringly ask us, “What is so special about Christianity, different from every religion in the world?” To be sure, this is a very significant question; and probably one of the most significant questions that any Christian could ask themselves: what is so special about Jesus Christ?

Our family has a close friend named Lou. Lou grew up in the nation of Thailand and he was a Buddhist for the first 20 years of his life until he met some Christian missionaries who introduced him to Jesus Christ. If you were to ask Lou today, “What is so special about Jesus Christ and Christianity different from every other religion in the world?” Lou would share with you the following story:

“When I was a Buddhist I felt like I was in the middle of a large lake. I was drowning and I didn’t know how to swim. As I struggled to keep my head above water, I looked out towards the shore and saw Buddha walking up to the edge of the lake. I was going under for the third time, when suddenly Buddha began shouting out instructions to me, teaching me how to swim. Buddha shouted, ‘Kick your legs and paddle your arms.’ But then Buddha said, ‘Lou, you must make it to shore by yourself.’ As I desperately struggled to follow the instructions of Buddha, I looked out towards the shore again, but this time I saw Jesus Christ walking towards the edge of the lake. However, Jesus did not stop at the edge of the lake. Jesus dove into the lake and he swam out and rescued me! And once Jesus had brought me safely back to shore, then he taught me how to swim, so that I could go back and rescue others!”

You see, this is the key difference between Christianity and every other religion in the world: Christianity is not a religion! What are religions? Religions are about human attempts to make our lives right with God, through our good works, sacrifices, rituals, and money. However, Christianity is not a religion. Christianity is about God entering human history to graciously save men and women through His Son Jesus Christ. It is only by placing our faith in Jesus Christ and submitting to his Lordship that we will be saved.

A relationship with God will never be found in any religion, because religions only offer swimming lessons to people drowning in the sea of sin. And it doesn’t matter how sincere or devout you are in your religious faith and practice, because the sea of sin is eternally immense. The only hope for men and women drowning in the sea of sin is Jesus Christ. God entered human history in the person of Jesus Christ; he dove into the sea of sin in order to save desperate and drowning people. If you’ll allow him to take you there, he’ll hold you in his loving arms and bring you safely to shore. And after arriving safely to shore, then your swimming lessons begin, so that you can go back and rescue others!

Simply, Relationship!

Religious people are the ones who shouted out crucify Him. Religious people are the ones who worship Buddha, Mohammed, False Prophets and Idol worshippers.

But those who worship the Lord Jesus Christ, Worship Him Through their own personal relationship through the born again experience and supernatural adoption as a child of the King. As son to a Father, As a brother to a Brother, As a Friend to A Friend. As a slave to his Master. This is so far from a religion!

Personally I 'love' this statement: but this time I saw Jesus Christ walking towards the edge of the lake. However, Jesus did not stop at the edge of the lake. Jesus dove into the lake and he swam out and rescued me! And once Jesus had brought me safely back to shore, then he taught me how to swim, so that I could go back and rescue others!”

Sooo true when Christ saves you.

Scripture says in 1 John 5:10
He who believes in the Son of God has the 'witness' in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given to His Son.

Once we believe in the Lord, we have the witness of the Lord within ourselves to give to others.

Religions are about human attempts to make our lives right with God, through our good works, sacrifices, rituals, and money.
We come to the Lord just as we are, and the Lord produces good works through us by His power~

Religion and Christianity are completely separate and distinct. Christianity is one among many world religions. Many people who embrace Christianity are said to have got religion. It would be more appropriate to say he or she found God, received the Holy Spirit, became a follower of Jesus Christ, accepted the Lord as their personal savior, or any other appropriate term that means that a person became a Christian.

World Religion

There are many world religions. Every culture has a different means of worship to celebrate their belief in a higher power. Some of these world religions are listed in the order of the approximate number of followers. They are Christianity, Islam, Secular/Atheist/Agnostic, Hinduism, Traditional Chinese Religion, Buddhism, primal-indigenous, African Traditional & Diasporic, Sikhism, Juche, Spiritism, Judaism, Baha', Jainism, Shinto, Cao Dai, Zoroastrianism, Tenrikyo, Neo-Paganism, Unitarian-Universalism, Rastafarianism, and Scientology .Every world religion is unique to the culture and society of its followers. The beliefs and practices are equally distinct from one another.

Christianity

Christianity as a religion was born out of Judaism two-thousand years ago when Jewish carpenter was born to a Jewish girl chosen by God for her pure spirit. According to the Bible Mary, a descendant of Kings was betrothed to Joseph who was also a descendant of Kings. According to Matthew 1:18-25 the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and she became pregnant. Mary and Joseph did not have normal married relations until after Jesus was born. Even before Jesus was born the words, God With Us, were connected to him. The birth of Jesus Christ is associated with a prophey made by the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 9:6 (New International Version) 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

According to Scripture, Jesus Christ was a controversial figure even in his own time. He performed great miracles healing the sick and even raised the dead, but was scorned by the religious leaders in Jerusalem because he was poor and they believed he was a heretic who claimed to be God in the flesh. These leaders never accepted Jesus Christ and when the opportunity arose they made him a prisoner, beat him unmercifully, and eventually gained permission from the Roman Governor of Judea from AD 26-36 to execute him. Jesus was poor and when he died one of his followers named Joseph of Aramithea was given permission to remove his body and bury him. Jesus was buried on the personal tomb of Joseph of Aramithea. Because of the public outcry and at the request of the chief priest of the Sanhedrin, Pilate ordered soldiers to stand guard at the tomb of Jesus Christ (Matthew 27:62-65) to keep the disciples from stealing the body. On the third morning after his death, Jesus rose from the dead. The large stone that had been placed in front of the tomb rolled away, and the Roman soldiers witnessed the event! Many people since the earliest days have tried to claim that the disciples stole Jesus body, or that Jesus was merely a man and not God. The truth is that every person makes the choice...to believe or not to believe! Christianity is founded on faith. The question rings out today as it was of the people by Pilate on that fateful day, "What will you do with Jesus, the Christ?"

Today Catholics and Christian Protestants are all followers of Jesus Christ. Within Protestant groups there are many denominations and groups who debate doctrinal issues such as formulas for baptism and issues about the Godhead. However, all agree that Jesus was God in the flesh. The world recognizes many gods, but some Christian believers and followers of Judaism believe in only one God. Catholics and most Christians believe in a triune God.

Thanks........

Is this not also prevalent amongst catholics? I see this all the time.
