Praying in the Spirit!

Postby Remnant » 25 Feb 2011, 07:49

What are your thoughts on praying in the Spirit?

Does it mean speaking in an unknown tongue?

What is it exactly?

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (NKJV) "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. "

I feel that praying in the Spirit doesn't necessarily mean praying in tongues. Not everyone has a prayer language for whatever reason. One can be overwhelmed in prayer when interceding on behalf of another and, to me, that also is praying in the Spirit even tho it's in English and tears. Hard to explain really. There are so many facets to prayer.

One can be 'tripped up' by this.
I have always prayed from the heart - and until yesterday never questioned my 'prayer style' (I guess you can call it that).
Bottom line, to question is to loosen the belt, and there is nothing the Devil/Satan/Lucifer wants more than to stop you from talking to God. We can read in Romans 8:26, KJV, Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
I personally think that we shouldn't dwell on how we pray - but to pray (talk to God) from the heart (as I have always). God wants us to keep a open line of communication with Him, don't allow the devil to hinder you from prayer, from talking to God. We can go to God at any time, anywhere in prayer. One should pray in accordance with God’s will but also in Faith that God can do anything. Sometimes it's difficult as a human to let go, and allow God's will be done. But He knows best, always and in all ways.

Romans 8:26
Eph 6:18
Mat 6:9-13 KJV,
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come . Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Paul is talking about a person praying from their inner being. A person who prays in the spirit or with the spirit is one who is praying from within and not just saying words or going through the motions so to speak or one who is led to pray, led by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, we can pray in the spirit or the Spirit and not speak in tongues. Therefore, praying in the spirit to me means a person could be praying from his very core or soul and we would say he or she is praying in the spirit.

YES! I agree! Way too much emphasis is place on tongues in alot of circles and that's just plain wrong.
