Navy rescinds restriction on Christian chat room
Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 8/3/2009 5:40:00 AMThe U.S. Navy is removing restrictions on religious speech on its Navy for Moms website.
The Navy for Moms site is a support group and hosts various chat rooms. Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel picks up the story.
"The Navy moms wanted to have a Christian chat group, but they were told by a Navy official that, in fact, this would not be permissible because the word 'Christian' was too divisive for a public forum," the Christian attorney explains.
After Liberty Counsel wrote a letter to Navy officials, several rear admirals actually got involved. Even Admiral J.F. Kilkenny said that he had instructed his staff to remove the current restrictions on religious and political debate.
"To remove 'Christian' from the chat room would be like removing hot dogs from a baseball stadium," Staver contends. "I mean, most Americans are religious. They believe in God, and most of those are Christian. So to say that you can't even use the word 'Christian' in a military chat group with other willing recipients is absolutely absurd."
The policy has been reversed and the group called "Christian Chat" is active.
