A one-mile cordon has been established around a volcano on Mount Kirishima after it erupted scattering rocks and ash across southern Japan and sending smoke billowing 5,000ft into the air.

The Meteorological Agency raised the volcanic alert to level 3 as ash today continued to spew from Shinmoedake on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu, and residents have been banned from going within a mile of the volcano following its worst eruption in 50 years.
Force of nature: Lightning strikes as Shinmoedake erupts, scattering ash and rocks across a wide swathe of southern Japan

Brother Frank, are your family members near this location?
We have a friend whose mother is from Japan, she just flew home to the U.S. after being hospitalized there from a fall.

They are in Okinawa, I believe is south of them. My son has not mention anything about this.

Okinawa is our friend's mother's homeland. His mother is Japanese and his father is Cherokee. She went home to visit, fell down a escalator, ended up in the hospital there for a period of two weeks.
They would not allow her to fly home so he had to fly over and bring her home. The hospital fee was staggering, and the plane fares were not cheap either. Thankfully another family friend flies for the airlines and he helped get our friend over there, which helped out.
