KAUKAUNA, WI - A lesbian pastor has been convicted in a Wisconsin church trial of breaking United Methodist rules by presiding at a "wedding" for a lesbian couple.
Amy DeLong was convicted by a 13-0 vote of her clergy peers in Kaukauna, but she was acquitted 12-1 of being a "self-avowed practicing homosexual."
DeLong testified that she was in a long-term committed relationship with a female partner, but refused to say whether that included "practicing" homosexual acts. The United Methodist Church allows homosexual clergy if they remain celibate.
Her conviction was followed by testimony to help jurors recommend a penalty that could range from suspension to defrocking. DeLong will soon find out her penalty -- the jury is expected to announce that later today (Thursday).
Methodist pastors are increasingly defying the ban on marrying same-gender couples, saying it violates the church's teaching of inclusion. Church officials say their longstanding rules are clear.
