Veterans officials' 'extreme religious hostility'

A Texas-based Christian law firm that defends First Amendment freedoms finds it "completely outrageous" that the Houston National Cemetery is banning the mention of God from veterans' funerals.
Liberty Institute has filed suit on behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), The American Legion, and The National Memorial Ladies over allegations of religious hostility and unlawful censorship by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and its director of the Houston National Cemetery.
Jeff Mateer, general counsel of Liberty Institute, says officials appear to be attempting to completely remove God.
Jeff Mateer (Liberty Institute)"They've told the VFW and The American Legion that they cannot have prayer during the burial services of our veterans, unless the family requests it in writing and submits the prayer for pre-approval," Mateer reports. "That's just completely outrageous," he adds.
Moreover, the attorney says, cemetery officials are instructing nearby funeral homes to keep mum about the prayer option.
"The director of the cemetery who works for the Veterans Administration has told them, 'You can't tell the families that they have the option of asking for prayer.' It is religious hostility to the extreme," the Liberty Institute general counsel decides.
A hearing on the suit is set for July 21.
