Church's Easter egg drop leaves some empty-handed
April 28, 2011

HARTLAND, Mich.— A Michigan church's Easter egg drop drew thousands more people than expected and left some parents complaining that their kids went home empty-handed.

Cornerstone Church of Oakland County's Highland Township issued an apology about Saturday's event at Hartland Middle School at Ore Creek that was being published in Thursday's editions of the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell.

The church said it expected about 4,000 people for the event where 30,000 eggs were being given out -- including half dropped from a helicopter, Cornerstone Church media minister Milan Klusacek said. About 10,000 to 15,000 turned out, due partly to an ad campaign, he said.

"Honestly, we were not prepared to handle that many people," Klusacek said. "It was sad that a lot of kids walked away with no egg, leaving parents heartbroken."

The church plans to pay for about $5,000 in damage to the grounds of the school, which is located in Livingston County about 38 miles northwest of Detroit.

Klusacek said he was sad to hear complaints that some parents complained that other parents pushed kids out of the way to collect eggs for their children.

Michelle Otis, Hartland Consolidated Schools community education director, said she was surprised at the size of the crowd.

"It was definitely not planned from either end to be what it turned out to be," Otis said. "But it seems like they are going to do the right thing."

What a terrible witness and message!

This church like many today is promoting and drawing attention to the Church meeting place and the business of it instead of lifting Christ up.

I feel that they could have done both. Done the Easter egg thing and spread the word while they had so many people there. I would hope that they dropped plastic eggs from a helicopter rather than real eggs. Inside the eggs they might have put something like a relgious tract or something like that to spread the word. I know that at the church here they have an egg hunt and they have sort of a mini sunday school class. They color from a religous coloring book. Then the grill and pass out little tracts for the kids telling them about Jesus. Plus they get candy and that sort of stuff. It is an all afternoon thing. But they always include Jesus!! My son use to go when he was little.

I personally do not feel that any of the secular celebration of Easter has a place at our fellowships. I simply cannot see how the two intertwine.

I agree with you, Wayne. I still feel that we should give Easter back to the pagans and celebrate Christ's resurrection on the correct day (the first Sunday after Passover) and have nothing to do with the bunny and eggs furtility garbage which it represents. And it would be called Resurrection Day, not Easter (Ishtar)
