Church's Easter egg drop leaves some empty-handed
April 28, 2011
HARTLAND, Mich.— A Michigan church's Easter egg drop drew thousands more people than expected and left some parents complaining that their kids went home empty-handed.
Cornerstone Church of Oakland County's Highland Township issued an apology about Saturday's event at Hartland Middle School at Ore Creek that was being published in Thursday's editions of the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell.
The church said it expected about 4,000 people for the event where 30,000 eggs were being given out -- including half dropped from a helicopter, Cornerstone Church media minister Milan Klusacek said. About 10,000 to 15,000 turned out, due partly to an ad campaign, he said.
"Honestly, we were not prepared to handle that many people," Klusacek said. "It was sad that a lot of kids walked away with no egg, leaving parents heartbroken."

The church plans to pay for about $5,000 in damage to the grounds of the school, which is located in Livingston County about 38 miles northwest of Detroit.
Klusacek said he was sad to hear complaints that some parents complained that other parents pushed kids out of the way to collect eggs for their children.
Michelle Otis, Hartland Consolidated Schools community education director, said she was surprised at the size of the crowd.
"It was definitely not planned from either end to be what it turned out to be," Otis said. "But it seems like they are going to do the right thing."
