Security guard handcuffs six-year-old school student
+
Chicago - At Carver Primary School, security guards were authorized to discipline multiple children for talking in class. They were subsequently handcuffed and told, “They were going to prison and would never see their parents again,” according to one parent.
The family of one of the students is now suing because the Chicago Board of Education has allegedly ignored a series of complaints.
"Unfortunately, we had to file a lawsuit because the Chicago Board of Education ignored my client on the day of the imprisonment and every day thereafter," Attorney Michael Carin told the Chicago Tribune. "We hope the Chicago Board of Education acknowledges its responsibility and resolves the matter quickly."
According to the Chicago Tribune, the lawsuit accuses the school of providing “untrained and unqualified persons for the tasks of disciplining, restraining, controlling and ensuring the safety of students …”
Carin, in a e-mail to the Tribune, said the six- and seven-year-old students were removed from the classroom by security guard David Allen to a separate office with no other adult supervision where they were held for hours during the school day.
They were told they were going to jail and would never see their parents again.
LaShanda Smith, who filed the lawsuit, is seeking $100,000 in damages for "physical" and "permanent" damage caused to her son.
Administrators for Carver Elementary School are refusing to comment.
