Are Middle East Revolutions a Prelude to Armageddon?

COMMENTARY | Columnist Niall Ferguson wrote in this week's Newsweek, "Time and again, Americans have hailed revolutions, only to fall strangely silent as those same revolutions proceeded to devour not only their own children but many other people's, too. In each case the body count was in the millions."

He believes the current uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East, even though they are revolutions by people yearning for democracy, will end in a bloody carnage such as what happened with the French, Chinese and Russian revolutions.

We, as Americans, have been ingrained since birth with the belief freedom and democracy are ideals worth fighting for and defending.

What happened in Egypt and what is happening in the Middle East reveals how deep the longing is for freedom and democracy in the hearts of oppressed people.

The desire for a real representative government and freedom from economic slavery will continue to spread across the Arab world like wildfire.

Then there is the danger these revolutions will not end up creating free and democratic states, rather, a situation where the people will be worse off than before and our hold in the Middle East and North Africa forever shaken off.

Fox TV host Glenn Beck believes there are sinister forces behind the unrest and chaos in the Middle East.

On his show, he blames the Muslim Brotherhood and even Communists.

To accentuate his point, according to Business Insider columnist John Ellis, the Muslim Brotherhood announced Feb. 15 that it will form a political party in Egypt.

Though it is tempting to do so, what happened in Egypt and the neighboring Arab countries should not be attributed to any one leader or group.

Freedom and democracy are concepts, ideals. An idea cannot be crushed.

An idea is like mercury. If you hit a glob of mercury with a hammer it will spread everywhere. The harder the established governments come down on the demonstrators, the further the ideals of freedom and democracy will spread. Look at Libya.

With cell phones and the Internet there can be no containment. America had best prepare itself for a long haul and reorganization of our hold in the oil-producing world. The Middle East and North Africa revolution has only begun.

Whether we like it or not, a seed has been planted and it is with the blood of the revolutionaries this seed is nourished.
